Ashok Rao has played many roles in his life. Amongst
many, he is a successful entrepreneur, a spirited
motivational speaker, and a budding movie producer.
On January 31, 2006, he charmed an audience of more
than 150 people, when he brought these three
elements together in his talk on "An Insider's,
Behind the Scenes, Look at Movie Making".
Ashok is now working on his fourth movie
production. His first movie "My Bollywood Bride"
recently premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival
and was voted Best of the Fest. His second movie,
"The Whisperers" is in post-production.
It was obvious that his intense involvement in each
movie gave him substantial insights into the
business, human, technological and creative aspects
of moviemaking.
In his own pleasant, light style, interspersed with
humor that brought the house down, he outlined the
major phases of movie making, from pre-production to
marketing and distribution. He later went back to
the framework he had just shared, and gave examples
with clips from "My Bollywood Bride" and "The
Whisperers" that delighted the audience.
The event was sponsored by IIT Alumni of Greater
Houston (IITAGH) and the
Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater
Houston (IACCGH). The audience
included not only members of the sponsoring
organizations but also local
independent movie makers and post-production firms,
mainstream newspapers,
local economic development representatives from
Governor Rick Perry's office, aspiring producers
from other parts of the US, Indian consular staff,
and Indian and overseas luminaries. The Indian
Consulate was represented by Deputy Consul General
Pillai.
The IITAGH and the IACCGH should be congratulated
for highlighting a unique
perspective on show biz to the Houston community.
And most importantly, Ashok Rao, an IIT alumnus and
an IACCGH member, should be thanked for sharing his
wisdom and knowledge with such candid eloquence and
charm, and of course, in such an
entertaining manner.
